The harsh rhetoric from Washington and Pyongyang during recent months has exacerbated an already confrontational relationship between our countries, and has probably eliminated any chance of good faith peace talks between the United States and North Korea. In addition to restraining the warlike rhetoric, our leaders need to encourage talks between North Korea and other countries, especially China and Russia. The recent UN Security Council unanimous vote for new sanctions suggests that these countries could help. In all cases, a nuclear exchange must be avoided. All parties must assure North Koreans they we will forego any military action against them if North Korea remains peaceful. 최근 몇 달간 미국과 북한 사이에 오고간 거친 수사적 표현은 양국 간에 이미 대립적이었던 관계를 더욱 악화시켰으며 미국과 북한과의 선의의 평화회담의 가능성 마저 앗아갔다. 전쟁과 같은 호전적인 수사를 자제하는 것과 더불어 우리 지도자들은 북한 그리고 특히 중국과 러시아와 같은 다른 국가들 간에 대화를 장려해야 할 필요가 있다. 최근 새로운 제재안에 대한 유엔안전보장이사회의 만장일치 표결은 이러한 국가들이 도움을 줄 수 있다는 것을 암시한다. 어떤 경우에든 핵 충돌은 피해야 한다. 모든 당사자들은, 북한이 평화를 유지한다면 북한에 대한 그 어떠한 군사적 조치를 포기할 것임을 북한 정부에 확약해야 한다. I have visited North Korea three times, and have spent more than 20 hours in discussions with their political leaders regarding important issues that affect U.S.-DPRK relations. 나는 북한을 세 번 방문 한 적이 있으며 북-미 관계에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 중요한 정치적 문제들에 대해 정치 지도자들과 20시간 이상을 토론했다.
